The Opera Next Door reimagines Bizet’s classic Carmen for our modern age. With music arranged and directed by Latin Grammy Award-winning Pedro Giraudo, whose quartet will translate Bizet’s score into sultry, Buenos Aires tango, Carmen and Micaëla will be empowered in this retelling, reframing the tragic love triangle for the abusive relationship it’s always been. This presentation is our sitzprobe which is the operatic term for the first time the singers and orchestra do a whole run-through. It’s kind of an open rehearsal, so there may be some stops. It’s a unique opportunity to see inside the creative process of putting together a whole production.
TOND aims towards fostering relationships with and within communities by creating immersive, site-specific opera productions in collaboration with community groups and leaders in diverse, working-class New York neighborhoods.
