SUMMARY:Soundbox
DESCRIPTION:At Soundbox\, we play to read! \nSoundbox is a pre-literacy playgroup focused on phonemes\, the individual parts of spoken words. For example\, the word “cat” can be separated into 3 phonemes. \nA step up in learning to read is learning to listen. \nIn each play session\, friends open a Soundbox and explore the “minis” inside to discover a sound pattern! A miniature apple\, a tiny alligator\, a very small astronaut\, an itty bitty axe\, and mini alpaca all begin with the same sound! \nWe play with our minis and learn more about our new sound through activities and games that are both super fun and researched based. We learn how to break words into sound parts\, practice sound order\, discover sound patterns\, and map sounds to letters. These skills are foundational for emerging readers. With each Soundbox they open\, our friends take one more step on their journey towards reading! \nCome play with us! \n** Currently this is NOT a drop-off play group. Adults stay to play. There is no charge for this 4-round session. This session is designed for children who are 4 to 5 years old. There are LOTS of small parts. Not suitable for kids under 4. Adult supervision required at all times. \nDates\nTuesday. SUMMARY:Hearing Into the Future CD Release: Celebrating duets and trios with friends
DESCRIPTION:Tony Jones\, tenor sax\nJessica Jones\, piano and tenor sax\nguests tba\n\n$20 in person\n\nAn intimate evening of duets and trios\, centered around the “Hearing Into the Future” CD release of Tony and Jessica Jones.\nWith over 40 years of playing together\, tenor saxophonist Tony Jones and fellow tenor player and spouse Jessica Jones have created an intimate musical bond. Though they have worked side by side in the Jessica Jones Quartet\, Peter Apfelbaum’s Hieroglyphics Ensemble\, and Joseph Jarman’s Lifetime Visions Orchestra among others this is their first release as a duo. The music on “Hearing Into the Future” displays the full range of Tony’s musical experience\, from being schooled in mainstream and progressive jazz from a very young age by his jazz-loving mother\, to co-leading a cooperative improvisation group\, “Pitch\, Rhythm and Consciousness\,” which is associated with freer jazz. You can hear the full spectrum of his influences in this project.\n\nTony’s bio:\nTony Jones grew up in a hotbed of jazz education in Berkeley California where he was steeped in music at home and trained in some of the earliest jazz education programs in the nation\, including Berkeley High School and UC Berkeley’s Young Musicians Program. While still in high school\, Jones was part of an innovative cooperative quartet that performed bold experimental music around the Bay Area and on an East Coast tour where they were exposed to the still thriving loft jazz scene.\nJones Co-founded the Jessica Jones Quartet and\, with violinist Charlie Burnham\, the Pitch\, Rhythm and Consciousness Ensemble and subsequent configurations; both groups record and perform extensively. He has performed and recorded with Don Cherry\, Muhal Richard Abrams\, Cecil Taylor\, Peter Apfelbaum\, and Joseph Jarman\, among others\, including in national and international jazz festivals. Jones was also part of New Artists Records\, a collective company founded by Connie Crothers and Max Roach.\nJones is a recipient of the inaugural Jerome Artist Fellowship and a Founder and Co-Artistic Director of Rare Earth Vibration Association (REVA Inc)\, a New York based performing arts non-profit organization.\n\nSaxophonist/pianist/composer Jones leads a pianoless group\, the Jessica Jones Quartet\, which features her original music. The group has played festivals and major clubs on the East and West Coasts of the U.S\, and received a Jazz Road grant from South Arts. Saxophonist husband Tony Jones\, bassist Stomu Takeishi and drummer Kenny Wollesen round out the group\, which has played in the Knitting Factory Festival in New York City\, the Bay Area Jazz Poetry Festival\, and the Eddie Moore Jazz Festival in Oakland\, California\, where the group headlined with special guest Don Cherry. The group has been featured in venues including Yoshi’s and Dizzy’s Club and released several CDs to critical acclaim collaborating with guests such as pianist Connie Crothers\, saxophonist Joseph Jarman of the Art Ensemble of Chicago\, and trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire. Poets\, storytellers\, and guest musicians have been augmented the core quartet throughout.\n\nIn addition\, Ms. Jones is active as a sideman and has worked with Joseph Jarman\, Cecil Taylor\, Karl Berger\, and Don Cherry as well as a variety of Haitian\, Caribbean\, and African bands. She is composing an opera with poet Arisa White debuting in 2025 in Maine\, and has a varied body of additional compositional work.\n\nJones is an innovative jazz educator and consultant\, working with children and young adults on improvisation\, composition\, and oral traditions for Jazz at Lincoln Center\, Stanford Jazz Workshop\, the Vision Festival\, Brooklyn Friends School\, Bard College and others. Currently\, Jones is Executive and Co-Artistic Director for REVA\, Inc\, a non-profit created to use creative arts to inspire\, educate and heal people and communities. REVA’s initiatives include Global JazzWomen festivals and related events\, educational and apprentice programs\, and partnerships with community music organizations in Botswana\, South Africa\, NYC and the SF Bay Area.

SUMMARY:The Tristan Geary Trio
DESCRIPTION:Tristan Geary – piano\nMark Venuto – bass\nJonathan Collazo – drums\nStraddling jazz and improvised music\, the Tristan Geary Trio presents music in equal parts original pieces\, raucous and restrained\, and improvised eclecticism\, joyous and spontaneous. Featuring stellar Hudson Valley musicians Mark Venuto (bass) and Jonathan Collazo (drums) the core trio is led by Tristan Geary (piano)\, whose music\, well rooted in the jazz tradition\, is as experimental as it is swinging. Informed by both their study of jazz and orchestral and ensemble composition\, the trio’s capacity for genre-bending creations and collaboration continue to light a fire underneath it\, pursuing a meandering\, storytelling sound\, while never sacrificing on groove\, blues\, and interplay. \nThe trio has performed extensively in the Hudson Valley region and in New York City. Geary. Born in London\, UK\, Geary is based in both the U.S. and Europe\, and graduated from Bard College in 2020 with a degree in jazz performance and composition.

SUMMARY:One Hour Raga with Sitar and Tabla
DESCRIPTION:“How does the raga behave? We don’t treat it as a fixed structure of notes. It has a soul. It comes to power\, you watch it flourish. So then\, we start developing. There’s a rhythmic section\, but still with no percussion. We develop it\, and then play with the tabla a cycle of maybe sixteen beats\, ten beats\, seven beats\, it depends. Like jazz\, there are so many rhythmic cycles.” – Abhik Mukherjee \nAbhik Mukherjee is a Kolkata-born sitar player of the Etawah-Imdadkhani gharana. He was initiated to sitar at the age of six by his father\, Sri Tarit Mukherjee\, and Sri Bimal Chatterjee\, while simultaneously receiving vocal instruction from Sri Kaylan Bose. He has since taken talim from Pandit Arvind Parikh and Pandit Kashinath Mukherjee\, themselves disciples of the legendary Ustad Vilayat Khan. He is a gold medalist in musicology from Rabindra Bharati University\, Kolkata\, and has also received a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture\, India. \nSameer Gupta in American jazz and Indian classical tabla player and has created a unique musical sound by combining traditional and modern improvisational styles drawing from his dual Indian and American heritage. Gupta did not begin mastering the tabla until well into his jazz career in the early ‘00s\, and now from bebop to avant-garde jazz\, and European classical percussion to North Indian classical tabla\, he continues to compose and perform music from a true multi-cultural perspective that bridges several continents.

SUMMARY:Why Can’t I Be Beautiful Like You
DESCRIPTION:J. A. Granelli –  Solo electric bass\, Compositions\, effects. \nColin Mackenzie – Video images and projections \nWhy Can’t I Be Beautiful Like You is an hour long multimedia piece built around the music of J .A. Granelli and the video projections of Colin MacKEnzie. \nWhat began as an online collaboration is now a live experience that marries memory\, loss\, joy and resilience. Both video and audio incorporate pre-recorded material\, found footage and improvisation that draws one into a world of beauty that exists around us every day but often goes unnoticed. \nWritten around the death of J.’s father and Colin’s longtime collaborator; the drummer and master improviser Jerry Granelli\, “Why Can’t I Be Beautiful Like You” looks at the passing of time and a hope for the future. The video images and music create their own dialogue\, organically informing one another and teasing out previously unseen meanings. The audience joins the artists as both take a surprising and fulfilling journey together. \n  \nBios: \nJ. Anthony Granelli is a native of northern California. He began to study bass at age eight with bassist and musical instrument pioneer Fred Marshall. J. Anthony has been covered in all major Jazz publications as well as various local media outlets. \nJ Anthony continues to compose and play in New York City and internationally. He currently leads his own Mr. Lucky Trio as well as Jazz/Reggae band the Gowanus Reggae and Ska Society and plays with numerous local projects.
