With that gift comes a responsibility to offer younger musicians the opportunity to hone their craft and express themselves artistically in an environment that does honor to the past while at the same time leaving room for the future. This is the beating heart of John Arnold’s newest project\, The Vanguard: not just to showcase the most brilliant young musicians in New York City\, but to invite them to reinterpret what has come before\, and to explore the real dynamics of jazz and neo-soul\, from roots to leaves\, from growl to whisper.\nJohn\, a native New Yorker\, cultivates a New York sound with young\, New York-based musicians\, all in their teens: tenor saxophonist Ben Sherman; trumpet player Elijah Allen; pianist Bix Cole; and bassist Sam Konin. They are the carriers of the new tradition\, and from their ranks will come the next luminaries of American musicianship.\n“John is pushing the barriers of contemporary drumming to new heights\,” guitarist John McLaughlin said. He possesses incredible technique\, and a musical mind to match it! I love playing with him because he is so creative and unique!”\nIn a chapter dedicated to him in the recently published book The New Face Of Jazz (Billboard press/Random House\, Inc.)\, author Cicily Janus states that “Marko’s name is quickly becoming synonymous with greatness” while Modern Drummer magazine calls Marko “a world class drummer” and ” a true innovator”.\nAs the composer for SVETI\, Djordjevic writes music inspired by the music of his Balkan roots as well as the sounds of the American artists that have influenced him\, from John Coltrane\, Thelonious Monk and Weather Report to Ahmad Jamal\, Tony Williams and Mahavishnu Orchestra.\n\n\n  \nJustin Salisbury –\n8:30PM\nPiano Jongkuk Kim –\nDrums Gianluca Girard – Electric Bass\nDaniele Germani – Saxophone/Keyboard\nMatt Sewell – Guitar\n\nJustin Salisbury is a Brooklyn-based pianist\, keyboardist\, and electronic musician.\nHe began his musical journey taking piano lessons at an early age\, as well as studying with several of the Pacific Northwest’s finest musicians\, such as Sharon Moe\, Clay Giberson\, Derek Sims\, and Alan Jones. In 2013\, Justin had the honor of playing piano at the Portland Jazz Festival\, under the direction of NEA Jazz Master Gerald Wilson. Later that year\, he received the Jimmy Lyons Scholarship- a full-tuition scholarship to attend the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston\, MA.\n\nAfter graduating from Berklee in 2017\, Salisbury moved to New York City\, where he currently resides. Within mere weeks\, he had quickly established himself as an in-demand sideman and bandleader\, actively involving himself in numerous musical projects. Today\, Salisbury has traveled and performed at many festivals and jazz clubs around North America\, Asia\, and Europe\, such as the Monterey Jazz Festival\, Carnegie Hall\, Lincoln Center\, European Jazz Competition\, Nancy Jazz Pulsations\, and Pop Montreal. \n  \nSalisbury has also collaborated with many notable artists from diverse musical backgrounds\, such as Mike Stern\, Emel Mathlouthi\, Eddie Chacon\, Jerry Barnes\, Marko Djordjevic\, Evan Marian\, Daniele Germani\, and Rodney Green. \n  \nIn 2022\, Justin released his debut album entitled “Evergreen” featuring Max Ridley on bass and Dan Nadeau on drums.

They blend the exuberant musical layers of the jazz big band era with Jamaican roots music into a unique\, accessible and joyous sound. Led by arranger\, trumpeter and educator Kevin Batchelor\, and featuring celebrated percussionist/vocalist\, and 85 year-young Larry MacDonald: together they have recorded and/or performed with nearly every great Jamaican music artist including Peter Tosh\, Bob Marley\, Bunny Wailer\, Lee Scratch Perry\, Skatalites\, Gil and Toots & The Maytals.

The group is composed of one big band and two small ensembles that perform Latin jazz and standard jazz pieces and showcase the finest young talent from across all NYC boroughs. \nFounded in 2010 by Arturo O’Farril and managed by the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance\,  The Fat Cats is led by Zack O’Farrill with Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra members Jim Seeley\, Berta Moreno\, and Jasim Perales\, as well as Arthur Alvarez and Adam Baksh-García. \nOver the years\, The Fat Cats have taken the stage at New York venues such as the Brooklyn Museum\, New York Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center\, the Frick Collection\, the Greene Space at WNYC\, BRIC House\, Birdland and Brooklyn’s Shapeshifter Lab who has welcomed the band for weekly rehearsals since their 2023-2024 season.

DESCRIPTION:Director Michael Thomas will lead the NYYS Jazz Band in his inaugural season as director. The program showcases the legacy of Thad Jones ranging from Thad Jones’s early days with the Count Basie Orchestra\, to his work as a co-founder and leader of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra.  This concert will feature works from Count Basie\, Duke Ellington\, Thad Jones\, as well as NYYS First Music Commission titled Dream Logic by Ben Beckman .\n\n\nAbout NYYS:\nThe New York Youth Symphony is one of the most awarded youth programs of its kind in the nation\, including the 2022 Grammy award for Best Orchestral Performance. It is recognized for its innovative\, educational programs for talented young musicians. Founded in 1963 as an orchestra to showcase the metropolitan area’s most gifted musicians ages 10-22\, its activities have since grown to encompass programs in chamber music\, conducting\, composition\, jazz\, and musical theater songwriting with performances at world-class venues including Carnegie Hall and Jazz at Lincoln Center. Through its commissioning program\, First Music\, the NYYS has commissioned over 170 works from young composers since 1984.

Now\, with new drummer Jongkuk Kim joining the fold\, the band is preparing for the recording of their third album. The new repertoire continues the band’s cultivation of a musical language that marries creative improvised music to more groove-centered music—electronica\, indie-rock\, hip-hop\, psychedelia\, and more. \n— \n\n\n\n\nSebastian Slomkowski – visual artist \nSebastian Slomkowski\, born in New York City is an artist with a practice focusing on large scale abstract painting. He graduated from University of the Arts London in 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in Fine Art Painting\, after which he maintained a rigorous studio practice moving between London\, Warsaw\, Helsinki and Barcelona. After years of nomadic life in Europe Sebastian moved back to NYC in the summer 2023. \nSlomkowski’s technique is as visceral as it is assembled; heavy oil paint layered on ghosts of thin paint cut the composition into fragments that often seem to want to shoot out of the picture. The space within the paintings is often unidentifiable\, however the paintings themselves occupy the room they inhabit with a definite presence. Founded in 2004 after a trip to the Django Reinhardt Jazz festival in Samois-Sur-Seine\, France. Performing at that very festival 10 later!\, Franglais sounds like jazz in the Sinti camps yet creative and beautiful solos from the front line make their music distinctly American.\n\nLisa Lui: \nLisa Liu is a guitarist based in Brooklyn\, NY. She plays gypsy jazz\, folk\, rock\, and solo guitar. Liu is an Artist Ambassador for Santa Cruz Guitar Company\, Sadowsky Guitars\, and Krivo Pickups. Liu has been published in Acoustic Guitar Magazine and has performed and taught alongside Mimi Fox\, Martin Taylor and John Knowles CGP. DESCRIPTION:The Fat Cats Youth Orchestra Open Workshop and Rehearsals Weekly at ShapeShifter\n  \nSparkling with the sound of young talent\, The Fat Cats is a pre-professional youth orchestra. The group is composed of one big band and two small ensembles that perform Latin jazz and standard jazz pieces and showcase the finest young talent from across all NYC boroughs. \nFounded in 2010 by Arturo O’Farril and managed by the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance\,  The Fat Cats is led by Zack O’Farrill with Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra members Jim Seeley\, Berta Moreno\, and Jasim Perales\, as well as Arthur Alvarez and Adam Baksh-García. \nOver the years\, The Fat Cats have taken the stage at New York venues such as the Brooklyn Museum\, New York Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center\, the Frick Collection\, the Greene Space at WNYC\, BRIC House\, Birdland and Brooklyn’s Shapeshifter Lab who has welcomed the band for weekly rehearsals since their 2023-2024 season.
