SUMMARY:Jung Stratmann Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Sujae Jung – Piano\nSteve Cardenas – Guitar\nWolf Robert Stratmann – Double bass\, Electric bass\nMarko Djordjevic – Drums\n\n  \n\nHome in the concrete jungle of New York City and inspired by the eclectic cultural mix of their tumultuous surroundings this young Contemporary Jazz duo is aiming for nothing less than bringing the realities of who they truly are to each and every single one of their performances. With a strong focus on empathy and their unifying approach on improvisation\, in which every\nmember is at all times allowed to do whatever they want\, they infuse their music with a powerful liveliness that can be experienced up close in their heartfelt recordings and concerts. Hailing from two different countries (South Korea\, Germany) and influenced by the large cultural\, racial and gender diversity they were involved with during their studies at The New School in Manhattan\, New York\, Sujae Jung’s and Wolf Robert Stratmann’s compositions and improvisations promote equality in every way. Sujae Jung (piano) and Wolf Robert Stratmann (Double Bass) met first during the beginning of their Jazz Bachelor studies The Hague NL in 2019 and have been playing and growing together ever since. With the addition of drums and guitar now they form a new exciting Jazz Quartet. Collectively they let their individual artistic heritages\, the imagery of their homeland’s vast landscapes and their love for the discovery of the unknown whirl together\, transcend cultural barriers and ultimately further the cause of the life enhancing and unifying spirit of jazz music.

SUMMARY:DUO BEAL / SCHOENFELD: UNCUT TERRITORY
DESCRIPTION:Jack Beal – Double Bass \nAdrienne Schoenfeld – Double Bass \n  \nUNCUT TERRITORY presented by DUO BEAL/SCHOENFELD is an exploration of the double bass featuring three newly composed pieces by Adrienne Schoenfeld\, Jack Beal and Sawyer Adler. The program showcases the versatility of the double bass\, delving into the rich sounds and history of the instrument through a dynamic repertoire which spans centuries of musical practice. The duo reimagines folk music as well as canonical standards by Vivaldi and Gliére\, presenting historical selections alongside a more modern view of the instrument through the likes of Oliveros’s textual scores and the pieces commissioned for this program. DUO BEAL/SCHOENFELD is a collaboration between Jack Beal and Adrienne Schoenfeld\, two composer/performer/improvisors based in Brooklyn. \n  \nhttps://jackbeal.xyz/ \nhttps://adrienneschoenfeld.com/

DESCRIPTION:7pm – Wagner Highschool Jazz Band\n8pm – Arturo O’Farrill & the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra\n\n\n\nFor the seventh consecutive year the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra joins together with the Staten Island based Susan J Wagner Highschool’s award winning Youth Jazz programs to present an inspiring concert celebrating the completion of one more season of musical education exchanges and collaborations.\n\n\n\nAbout Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra\nGRAMMY Award-winning pianist\, composer\, and educator Arturo O’Farrill—leader of the “first family of Afro-Cuban Jazz” (New York Times)—was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Son of the late\, great composer Chico O’Farrill\, Arturo played piano in Carla Bley’s Big Band from 1979 through 1983 and earned a reputation as a soloist in groups led by Dizzy Gillespie\, Lester Bowie\, Wynton Marsalis\, and Harry Belafonte. In 2002\, he established the GRAMMY Award-winning Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra (ALJO) to bring the vital musical traditions of Afro Latin jazz to a wider general audience\, and to greatly expand the contemporary Latin jazz big band repertoire through commissions to artists across a wide stylistic and geographic range. In March 2021\, O’Farrill and the ALJO won their 7th GRAMMY for Four Questions\, with Cornel West as guest orator. In September 2018\, O’Farrill released his album\, Fandango at the Wall: A Soundtrack for the United States\, Mexico\, and Beyond\, which was also released as a documentary for HBO MAX. In 2019\, O’Farrill was appointed Professor at The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music in the Global Jazz Studies department and is currently the Associate Dean for Equity\, Diversity\, and Inclusion. O’Farrill’s debut recording with Blue Note Records …dreaming in lions… was nominated for a 2022 GRAMMY Award in the “Best Instrumental Composition” category\, and his album\, Virtual Birdland (ZOHO)\, was nominated for “Best Latin Jazz Album.” In 2023\, O’Farrill won a GRAMMY Award for Fandango at the Wall in New York in the “Best Latin Jazz Album” category. O’Farrill is a Steinway Artist and records for Blue Note Records.\n\nAbout Susan Wagner High School Jazz Band\nThe Susan Wagner High School Jazz Band has been a premier performance ensemble in the NYC Department of Education for years.
