SUMMARY:Maui Fire Disaster Relief Fund Benefit Concert
DESCRIPTION:Isenberg’s fascination with Wes Anderson’s films dates back to his adolescence. There is a “mixtape” aspect to a Wes Anderson playlist: an intimate collection of one’s favorite songs. He has performed for Radio City Christmas Spectacular\, Broadway shows\, and has toured internationally with Dave Juarez Trio\, and Soul Doctor the musical. He is an endorsing artist for Aguilar Amps\, DR Strings\, Fender Guitars and Radial Engineering. He is also a member of the Like Minds Trio\, the founder/CEO of the Clinton Hill Music School in Brooklyn and a doctoral candidate at Stony Brook U where he is the assistant to legendary jazz trombonist Ray Anderson.\n  \n\n\n  \n\nSami Stevens\, voice\nAlicyn Yaffee\, Guitar\nMoshe Elmakias\, piano\nMarty Isenberg\, bass\nJonas Esser\, drums

They have one self titled album out\, but the music has shifted significantly from the recorded music. It started as a “fusion” project and has developed into a larger scope project. MESS has performed in various iterations across the US\, performing different music including written music\, free music based off of spoken word samples\, and more. Daniel Rossi and MESS hope to expand and adapt to more situations\, technologies\, and music.\n  \n\nLOGAN KANE- Logan Kane\, one of jazz’s most sought-after young bassists and a prominent figure in LA’s thriving creative music scene\, is proud to present Floor Plans\, his first recording at the helm of an acoustic jazz quintet. Kane’s first full-length\, NOPE\,SCIENCE (2020)\, showcased his adventurous writing for nonet\, while Planet Mirrors (2021) was electronic\, catchy\, riotously inventive\, with Kane playing all instruments and singing (in the company of several guests). On Floor Plans\, Kane is heard mainly on upright bass\, the instrument he plays extensively as a sideman with the likes of Steve Lehman\, Ari Hoenig\, Becca Stevens\, Justin Brown\, Edward Simon and Joel Ross\, to name a few. The music is imposingly dense and ambitious\, with rhythmic precision and soaringly complex melodic arcs\, every moment of it fired by the extraordinary players in Kane’s band.\n  \nKane self-produced his previous albums\, but on Floor Plans he brings in prolific alto saxophonist and composer David Binney to serve in that role. Hugely influential on the New York jazz scene for decades\, Binney returned to his native California six years ago and became a magnet for LA’s extraordinary rising talents. He featured Kane on Tomorrow’s Journey\, his jaw-dropping small-group acoustic outing for Ghost Note\, as well as two tracks of the 2018 electronic release Here & Now. Binney not only produces Floor Plans\, he gets his hands in the dirt of the highly demanding music\, playing alto throughout and joining eminent tenor saxophonist Mark Turner on two tracks\, ‘Mountains’ and ‘Digit. ‘Dave is probably the biggest influence on me in my career\,’ Kane remarks. ‘He really catapulted us into a new understanding of what was possible in music. I was one of the first bass players he played with after he moved here\, and I’ve played with him quite a bit ever since. He’s really imprinted on me a willingness to do a lot of different stuff — I have a lot of music where I’m singing\, using electronics\, mixing and mastering things

SUMMARY:[Switch~ Ensemble] presents Sounds from the Periphery
DESCRIPTION:Switch~ Ensemble \n$15 advance general admission\n$15 students/seniors available at door\n$20 door general admission\n$10 virtual\nFor our first concert of the 2023-24 season\, the [Switch~ Ensemble] presents Sounds from the Periphery\, a concert of four captivating quartets by composers Christopher Chandler\, Victoria Cheah\, Heather Stebbins\, and Fausto Romitelli. Drawing from their April 2023 split disc Roots\, Chandler’s still life (2022) and Stebbins’s Among Arrows (2021) feature vibrant\, elemental\, and intensely tactile electroacoustic music\, creating a listening experience that hones into all the fine details of the sonic moment. In Cheah’s introspective We drank wine from the bottle on a rooftop next to god (2017)\, a monolithic microtonal sonic landscape intertwined with sine tones gradually unfolds. At the heart of our program’s sonic journey lies Fausto Romitelli’s mesmerizing Domeniche alla periferia dell’impero (“Sundays on the Periphery of the Empire”). Romitelli’s work celebrates the intricate interplay of timbre and texture\, inviting you to delve into a world of profound sensory experience.

SUMMARY:Bright Dog Red at ShapeShifter Lab
DESCRIPTION:Bright Dog Red returns to ShapeShifter Lab\, playing in support of their Ropeadope Records releases\, “Under the Porch.”\n\nCelebrated for “sublimely marrying jazz with hip-hop\, funk\, and electronic music” (JazzTimes)\, Bright Dog Red has long been “a fixture on the NYC jazz and improvisation scene” (Jazz Journal). The group’s “proudly unanchored improvisation” (Downbeat) has been described as “part Ornette Coleman and Prime Time\, part Lounge Lizards\, part A Tribe Called Quest” (JazzTimes).\n\nBDR will play in support of their most recent offering\, “Under the Porch\,” released earlier this year on Ropeadope and awarded 4-stars in Downbeat. The group specializes in “genre-agnostic\, uncategorizable\, and intensely thrilling” improvisation (Glide Magazine). BDR “can potentially appeal to jam-band\, funk\, rock\, or hip-hop devotees ready to raise the roof” (JazzTimes).

SUMMARY:Sameer Gupta + Ben Tyree = Unruly Neighbors
DESCRIPTION:Unruly Neighbors is an improvisational duo based in Brooklyn\, NY composed of guitarist Ben Tyree and drummer/percussionist Sameer Gupta. In 2020\, the duo heard the increasingly urgent call for co-creating new visions for what the world could look like post-pandemic. They answered with their joint debut recording project\, Unruly Neighbors (Sonic Architectures) – a largely improvisational sculpture of electric and acoustic sound that is\, at once\, emotive\, gritty\, and transcendent. Experience their eclectic and supernatural improv duets on their latest release\, Catalytic. The album weaves a contrast of Tyree’s searching\, dark and\, at times\, piercing tone with the tickling\, trance-inducing drive of Gupta’s hybrid tabla/drum kit\, creating dream-like washes of sound that play out to the many tensions and uncertainties of these times. Expect the unexpected.
