SUMMARY:Ingrid Schyborger: “In Love With The World” Pre Album-Release Show.
DESCRIPTION:“In love with the world” Is the title of Ingrid Schyborger’s upcoming debut album. \nIt features a jazz quartet combined with a string quartet\, a project she’s been working on for the past three years. Some of the musicians on the album include Ian Cleaver (nl) on trumpet\, Tommaso Perazzo (pi) drummer and percussionist Rogerio Boccato\, and a guest feature with Yuko Kawasaki on vocals. \nDuring her upbringing\, Ingrid spent much of her time in the summer outdoors\, playing in the forests of rural Sweden. The album is a rewind to what it was like wandering alone in the woods\, being only eight or ten years old at the time\, hearing only the sound of the creaking trees and the birds. \nMuch of the music on the albums has been inspired by those summers\, as well as a reflection on our society today\, how urban societies have lost their connection to the earth’s nature\, and how humans have lost their love for the planet. \nWhile combining melodies that capture the listener’s ears with playfulness of rhythm and harmonic changes\, Ingrid’s music always has a story behind it. The musicians’ communication with each other brings forward a playfulness in the performance\, making it both exciting and interesting to listen to. \nShe brings the audience on a journey through different sounds and musical landscapes\, and explores ideas of what it means to be a human being living on this earth. \nMore about Ingrid Schyborger:\nIngrid Schyborger is a double bassist and composer living in New York. Originally from Stockholm\, Sweden\, she grew up in a small neighbourhood outside the city with a house full of musical instruments. She started with the piano at age of 4 and at the age of 9 she began playing classical cello and electric bass as well. After studying jazz bass in high school\, she went on to do her undergraduate at The Royal College of Music (KMH) in Stockholm\, and later on her Masters Degree at The Manhattan School of Music in New York. Ingrid has already played with prominent musicians in Sweden\, Europe\, New York and Kenya\, and is already making her way as a composer and bass player in the city.

SUMMARY:Scheidt/Perry/Anderson/Scott
DESCRIPTION:Holger Scheidt – upright bass\nRich Perry – tenor saxophone\nNick Anderson – drums\nDave Scott – trumpet \nFREE EVENT! \n \nThis quartet lead by the German bass player Holger Scheidt performs three-part composition and improvisation with drums. \n„…lithely dovetailing horn parts… Scheidt´s unfussy themes and spare but effective arrangements… lend… an overall unity of form and tone…“ wrote Tom Greenland in NewYorkCityJazzRecords about Scheidt’s enja records release „Schwimmende Elefanten“ in 2019. Precise composition lays down the foundation for the often free forms of improvisation on this record. Stylistically open voice leading creates a direct acoustic Jazz music that resounds atonal Modernism as much as classic Romanticism. In 2024 the quartet builds on Scheidt’s body of work and citing the point of departure of this project\, „You might be heavy\, but your still floating“\, the question remains\, what weight do swimming elephants have? \nWhether gravitation or levitation represent the pre-dominant forces\, is being determined not least by the outer circumstances and the present moment. One can never be certain\, but one can rely on instinct and intuition. The musical instinct and intuition of the 4 musicians coming together here\, promise weight and free floating at the same time.

SUMMARY:Michele Romeo Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Piero Alessi – Drums\nCarlo De Biaggio – Electric Bass\nJustin Salisbury – Keys\nMichele Romeo – Electric Guitar \nItaly born-and-raised and NYC-based guitar player\, producer and composer Michele Romeo has always had a fine hear for music since an early age. When he was only 4 years old\, his parents gifted him a present that would be a lifechanging milestone: his very first guitar. He formally started to study guitar at the age of 10 and\, shortly after\, he began attending the Centro Formazione Musicale in Palermo to enrich his knowledge and to start mastering the instrument professionally. \nAt 13 years old he started dealing with a particular eye condition which led him to lose his sight at the age of 18. Nonetheless\, this did not scratch his will to pursue his main goals in life. In 2012 Michele started to work to his very first album\, Leaves\, which was released on December 2014 and presented at the renowned Feltrinelli Music Stores in Palermo right upon its release. \nThe life experience in Milan was an essential turning point for his career: in fact\, at the end of his successful university path\, he decided to dedicate his life to music and never look back again. This is when he began to focus on fulfilling one of his lifelong goals: moving to the United States and work as a professional musician. In 2016\, Michele gained a scholarship to attend the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. The Boston experience was a great opportunity for him to meet and play with many talented musicians and masters from the most different backgrounds. This eventually led him to grow a lot as a musician and to find new pathways in his approach to the instrument. Berklee was also a great gateway for Michele to access the world of music production\, allowing him to add the skills of a mixing engineer on top of the musician ones. From 2022 Michele settled down in New York City and he started composing and producing his own projects and tracks\, among which Brookline\, Herbert Street\, Space Fantasy and I Do Like You But.

SUMMARY:Why Can’t I Be Beautiful Like You
DESCRIPTION:J. A. Granelli –  Solo electric bass\, Compositions\, effects. \nColin Mackenzie – Video images and projections \nWhy Can’t I Be Beautiful Like You is an hour long multimedia piece built around the music of J .A. Granelli and the video projections of Colin MacKEnzie. \nWhat began as an online collaboration is now a live experience that marries memory\, loss\, joy and resilience. Both video and audio incorporate pre-recorded material\, found footage and improvisation that draws one into a world of beauty that exists around us every day but often goes unnoticed. \nWritten around the death of J.’s father and Colin’s longtime collaborator; the drummer and master improviser Jerry Granelli\, “Why Can’t I Be Beautiful Like You” looks at the passing of time and a hope for the future. The video images and music create their own dialogue\, organically informing one another and teasing out previously unseen meanings. The audience joins the artists as both take a surprising and fulfilling journey together. \n  \nBios: \nJ. Anthony Granelli is a native of northern California. He began to study bass at age eight with bassist and musical instrument pioneer Fred Marshall. In his teens Granelli moved to Seattle Washington where he performed with Jay Clayton\, Julian Priester and Jerry Granelli while studying at Cornish College of the Arts. \nGranelli received a BFA from California Institute of the Arts in 1991. At Cal Arts he explored creating a personal vocabulary of improvisation while studying with  Charlie Haden and performing with John Bergamo and Miroslav Tadic. In 2006 Granelli earned a Masters Degree in Jazz Composition from New York University. \nAfter moving to Brooklyn New York in 1992 Granelli was very active in the scene that flourished around the Knitting Factory. While in New York he was a founder/ assistant director with Ralph Alessi of the School for Improvised Music an internationally attended program that runs during the summer. Granelli also helped to found and is now artistic director of Jerry Granelli’s Creative Music Workshop in Halifax Nova Scotia\, which just celebrated it’s 25th anniversary in 2023. \nIn 2000 Granelli started Love Slave Records which released nine critically acclaimed records by his own bands as well as other “downtown” musical luminaries. J. Anthony has been covered in all major Jazz publications as well as various local media outlets. \nJ Anthony continues to compose and play in New York City and internationally. He currently leads his own Mr. Lucky Trio as well as Jazz/Reggae band the Gowanus Reggae and Ska Society and plays with numerous local projects. Granelli was the musical director and arranger for the “Love Love” project with Julian Priester\, Jerry Granelli’s “Sand Hills Reunion with Rinde Eckert and the “Dance Hall Project” featuring Bill Frisell and Robben Ford. \nIn 2019 and 2020 Granelli released “My Pretty Demon” and “End To Begin” with his trio Mr. Lucky. A solo bass album entitled “Why Can’t I Be Beautiful Like You” was released in 2023 with featured accompanying videos by Canadian filmmaker Colin MacKenzie. \nGranelli has performed with: David Tronzo\, Julian Priester\, Jay Clayton\, Jane Ira Bloom\, Mose Allison\, Brad Shepik\, Francoise Houle\, Jerry Granelli\, Briggan Krauss\, Bill Frisell\, Robben Ford\, John Abercrombie\, Anthony Cox\, Ralph Alessi\, Rinde Eckert\, Jamie Saft\, Buck 65\, Miroslav Tadic\, Peter Epstein\, John Bergamo\, Alicia Svigles\, Jamie Haddad\, Mike Dillon\, Cedric “Im” Brooks\, Ohad Talmor\, Michael Blake\, Dave Douglas\, Smokey Hormel\, Ben Goldberg\, Ned Rothenberg\, John Schott\, Anthony Coleman. \n\nColin MacKenzie is an award-winning filmmaker\, generally focusing his cinematic energies on documentary work.  His most recent collaboration: Why Can’t I Be Beautiful Like You: Live\, sees him creating ambient documentary work projected live during the live performance by composer/bassist J Anthony Granelli. Colin has been consistently telling stories for over three decades. Before and during COVID\, he worked on and completed the poetry infused documentary “The Lobster Whisperer”\, examining the life choices of a lobster fisherman. In 2019\, along with animator Aparna Kapur\, he co-directed the NFB produced “Balakrishna” (2019). This short film mixes animation and archival footage to tell the true story about an elephant and a boy in Nova Scotia. In 2017\, he directed “FANNIE in Montreal” (filmed entirely on iPhone): in 1955 a young woman from Cape Breton moved to Montreal and never forgot. With “Decoding the Undertow” (2007)\, he explores the creative process of three dancers and three skateboarders in a piece by choreographer and co-director Sally Morgan. In 2006\, he directed “COGSWELL”\, based on a play by writer and broadcaster Stephanie Domet. “Jerry Granelli – In the Moment” (2001) explores the life of a master of improvisation\, drummer/teacher Jerry Granelli. This followed a short experimental documentary\, “A Granellian Encounter” (1998)\, winning the Best Canadian Short Film Award at the Atlantic Film Festival. Colin also produced and directed several music videos for artists such as Sloan\, Jill Barber and Julie Doiron. An enduring passion for radio also led to his producing radio documentaries for the CBC.

Like jazz\, there are so many rhythmic cycles.” – Abhik Mukherjee \nAbhik Mukherjee is a Kolkata-born sitar player of the Etawah-Imdadkhani gharana. SUMMARY:Soundbox
DESCRIPTION:At Soundbox\, we play to read! \nSoundbox is a pre-literacy playgroup focused on phonemes\, the individual parts of spoken words. For example\, the word “cat” can be separated into 3 phonemes. \nA step up in learning to read is learning to listen. \nIn each play session\, friends open a Soundbox and explore the “minis” inside to discover a sound pattern! A miniature apple\, a tiny alligator\, a very small astronaut\, an itty bitty axe\, and mini alpaca all begin with the same sound! \nWe play with our minis and learn more about our new sound through activities and games that are both super fun and researched based. We learn how to break words into sound parts\, practice sound order\, discover sound patterns\, and map sounds to letters. These skills are foundational for emerging readers. With each Soundbox they open\, our friends take one more step on their journey towards reading! \nCome play with us! \n** Currently this is NOT a drop-off play group. Adults stay to play. There is no charge for this 4-round session. This session is designed for children who are 4 to 5 years old. There are LOTS of small parts. Not suitable for kids under 4. Adult supervision required at all times. \nDates\nTuesday.
