SUMMARY:Percy Jones meets Time Trout
DESCRIPTION:9pm-9.45pm: MJ12 \n10pm-10.45pm: Time Trout \n  \nMJ12 \nPercy Jones – Bass \nChris Bacas – Sax \nDavid Phelps – Guitar \nStephen Moses – Drums \n  \nTime Trout \nViv Corringham – Vox \nMarcus Mummins – Sax \nDave Mandl – Bass \nStephen Moses – Drums \n  \nPercy Jones and MJ12 JazzRock !! \n  \nTime Trout is drummer Stephen Moses and bass guitarist Dave Mandl create a series of hypnotic locked grooves\, that simultaneously draw you in and subtly pull the rug out from underneath you all at once; like repeatedly stumbling down the last couple of steps to the dance floor. Over this hypnotic ouroboros of a rhythm section\, Marcus Cummins’ saxophone deftly feints and weaves between the cracks\, running the gamut from tentative\, staccato stabs to giddily whirling lyricism. \n  \nThe three instrumentalists constantly trade emphases in such an assured way that you quickly stop trying to focus in on one part and give yourself over to the single\, intricate whole; running through which\, like a bright red thread through the labyrinth\, is Viv Corringham’s astonishing spoken word vocal performance. A restless stream of consciousness that seems to have the primal urgency of a message delivered in a dream\, Corringham mixes Delphic abstractions with bracingly lucid implorations\, the whole performance delivered with such seamlessness that it’s hard to tell whether the lyrics are channeling the music or vice versa. The answer\, of course\, is both.

SUMMARY:"Abiding Memory" Album Release Concert - Phillip Golub Quintet
DESCRIPTION:Phillip Golub –  Piano\nAlec Goldfarb – Guitar\nDaniel Hass – Cello\nSam Minaie – Bass\nAdriano Vicentino – Drums\n  \n\n\nThe Phillip Golub Quintet is a new project of Brooklyn\, NY-based pianist and composer Phillip Golub. The quintet’s debut album\, called “Abiding Memory”\, is slated for release on June 21\, 2024. The record will come out jointly on Berthold Records (Germany) and Endectomorph Music (USA).\n\n\n  \nThe music is stylistically unique\, employing an electric guitar and a cello alongside piano\, bass\, and drums. His wide-ranging influences come into contact\, conflict\, and marriage\, producing a music that reflects on a desire to live in an imagined past. But instead of being stuck in the past\, the music is “stuck in the present.” Themes and ideas are recycled and repurposed throughout our set\, creating a sensation for the listener that feels like the act of remembering. Their set isn’t made up of “tunes” but rather one through-composed suite of interwoven movements.

DESCRIPTION:Sujae Jung – Piano\nSteve Cardenas – Guitar\nWolf Robert Stratmann – Double bass\, Electric bass\nMarko Djordjevic – Drums\n\n  \n\nHome in the concrete jungle of New York City and inspired by the eclectic cultural mix of their tumultuous surroundings this young Contemporary Jazz duo is aiming for nothing less than bringing the realities of who they truly are to each and every single one of their performances. With a strong focus on empathy and their unifying approach on improvisation\, in which every\nmember is at all times allowed to do whatever they want\, they infuse their music with a powerful liveliness that can be experienced up close in their heartfelt recordings and concerts. Hailing from two different countries (South Korea\, Germany) and influenced by the large cultural\, racial and gender diversity they were involved with during their studies at The New School in Manhattan\, New York\, Sujae Jung’s and Wolf Robert Stratmann’s compositions and improvisations promote equality in every way. Sujae Jung (piano) and Wolf Robert Stratmann (Double Bass) met first during the beginning of their Jazz Bachelor studies The Hague NL in 2019 and have been playing and growing together ever since. With the addition of drums and guitar now they form a new exciting Jazz Quartet. Collectively they let their individual artistic heritages\, the imagery of their homeland’s vast landscapes and their love for the discovery of the unknown whirl together\, transcend cultural barriers and ultimately further the cause of the life enhancing and unifying spirit of jazz music.

SUMMARY:Dan Loomis "Songs For the Mother Tree" and Elsa Nilsson - "Lullabies for a World on Fire"
DESCRIPTION:7pm-8pm: Dan Loomis\n8:30-9:30pm: Elsa Nilsson\n\n\n \nDan Loomis – Bass & Composition\nMike McGinnis – Clarinets\nNoa Fort – Voice and Piano\nJeff Miles – Guitar \n  \nBand of Pulses:\nElsa Nilsson – Flutes and FX\nSantiago Leibson – Piano\nMarty Kenney – Bass\nRodrigo Recabarren – Drums \n  \nA stalwart of the Brooklyn creative music scene\, Dan Loomis is a daring leader\, a sought-after sideman\, and a prolific composer whose unique view of the world and music has led to the creation of innovative and moving works. Loomis has produced over a dozen recordings as leader and co-leader of collective ensembles including Spoke and The Wee Trio. In 2020\, he released the project “Job’s Trials: A Jazz Song Cycle”\, an original musical/theatrical presentation which earned glowing praise from the press. A song from “Job’s Trials” went on to become the title track on the album“Abundance”\, earning Loomis a Juno Award with Turboprop. Loomis is also consistently in demand as a recording artist and sideman\, most notably with The Joel Frahm Trio and Vadim Neselovskyi trio\, which recently recorded with John Zorn on his Book of Beriah release. \n  \n“Songs for the Mother Tree”\, a suite of Tree-born songs dives into the unique personalities and wisdoms of trees. Building on the recent explosion of new scientific discoveries about the communications\, intelligences\, and communal lives of trees\, these songs combine text and music to create an immersive experience\, inviting the audiences to see the world from a viewpoint of a tree. \nhttps://www.danloomismusic.com/ \n  \nNilsson is a prolific composer and flute player with a socially integrated approach to music making. Her most recent release is “Pulses”\, a Chamber Music America New Jazz works piece exploring the intersection between Jazz phrasing and spoken language through the voice of Dr Maya Angelou. Nilsson is currently working on a song cycle exploring the concept of “Lullabies For A World On Fire”. It is a collection of songs to celebrate the beauty found in the cracks. Like the flower that fought its way through concrete to reach for the sun with the joy of its entire being. Lullabies themselves are songs that exist in transition. They are meant to take us from one state to another\, from awake to asleep\, alert to relaxed\, on edge to a sense of safety. In this collection of songs it is not her intent to gloss over the brutality of the world\, the darkness and horror of the realities we live through in this time of climate collapse\, war\, political extremity and division. The intent here is to create something that holds space for both the beauty and brutality of it all. Our world is on fire\, and these songs are meant to be a balm to soothe when things feel overwhelming in the hope to cultivate the strength we need in order to continue face what is coming. \nhttps://www.elsanilssonmusic.com/

The ensemble has a warm\, roomy tone which reminds me of old jazz records. On the other hand\, the band is not afraid to experiment with distortion effects\, li-fi dynamics and many other elements adding a grittier character to the mix. The sheer variety of sounds and influences in this release is also quite fantastic\, giving the tracks a unique and memorable feel that truly stands out.”- Stacey Zering INK19 \n“…the Domino Ensemble’s debut album is an intriguing journey filled with contrasts and surprising shifts. The performers are all seasoned veterans who collaborate with ease and instinctively cross genres to form a style which is distinctly their own. Purple Ego is released by Centaur Records and is available on Spotify\, Apple Music and from all major music retailers.” – Zachary Dierick – The Clarinet \n“A great disc [Recompensa]\, and a treat for all jazz lovers. The range of styles is large; all three players are superb in their own right and even better together as one entity. A Want List candidate\, for sure. […] five stars: A great disc\, and a treat for all jazz lovers.” Colin Clarke – Fanfare
