With captivating guitar riffs and backed by the dynamic duo of Neil Collins on bass and Matt Wilson on drums\, this trio creates a blend of surf rock\, psychedelia\, and world influences. Their innovative artistry has already caught the eye of music reviewers\, like J. Swartwood from Aquarium Drunkard\, who praises Burnet’s merging of “simultaneously modern and vintage” sounds. Twice featured as a “New & Notable” on Bandcamp\, Burnet’s music is described as a cinematic listening experience. Their most recent EP\, Electric Surf\, was released in June. The night will also showcase a film featuring over 300 stunning 35mm landscape photos captured during an epic 10\,000-mile road trip. Together\, the music and visuals will take listeners on a captivating journey through the connections between nature and instrumental sound. Kioea’s band name derives from an extinct Hawaiian songbird. It symbolizes strength and translates to mean “Stand Tall.” Lead guitarist Carand Burnet adds\, “Stand Tall is a mantra that empowers me as a female musician\, and I hope this music inspires others.”ShapeShifter Lab\, located at 837 Union Street in Park Slope\, Brooklyn\, is a performance space that opened in 2011 and was initially located in Gowanus. The venue hosts some of the world’s most innovative artists who seek a flexible platform to present their work. For more information about the show\, please visit https://shapeshifterplus.org/event/kioea-echolocation/.FOR MORE INFO ON KIOEA:kioeamusic.comkioea.bandcamp.com/album/electric-surfinstagram.com/kioeamusicABOUT KIOEA (kioeamusic.com|kioea.bandcamp.com)Kioea’s name derives from an extinct Hawaiian songbird. It symbolizes strength and translates to mean “Stand Tall.” Guitarist Carand Burnet\, the driving force behind the band’s intricate melodies\, wants to uplift listeners with her music. Burnet adds\, “Stand Tall is a mantra that empowers me as a female musician\, and I hope this album inspires others.”Kioea (pronounced kēōˈāə) is a music group featuring Carand Burnet(she/her) as lead guitarist and songwriter\, supported by Neil Collins on bass and Matt Wilson on drums. Their music blends sounds of surf rock\, psychedelia\, and global influences. J. Swartwood (Aquarium Drunkard) described Burnet’s music as “simultaneously modern and vintage.” \nBandcamp recognized Kioea for their EP and album\, Stand Tall\, which they selected as New & Notable releases. Bandcamp’s Editorial Director writes\, “The debut LP from Kioea is dreamy psychedelic surf music that calls back to the ’60s while feeling remarkably contemporary.” Jason M. Rubin (The Arts Fuse) comments\, “Burnet’s surf guitar takes the listener on journeys of their own\, all of which feed a desire to hear more.” \nDoyle Dean\, host of The Dean’s List on NCPR\, notes that “Burnet’s guitar playing owes a little bit to the sound of The Ventures\, Dick Dale\, and the ’90s Canadian daredevils of the form\, Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet. But her singular voice owes just as much to that of Sonny Rollins – lost in the madness of a late 1950s session for Riverside. It’s that departure Kioea offers.” \nKioea has performed at The Thing in the Spring Festival\, Tidelands Festival\, Twenty Summers\, 3S Artspace\, The Music Hall\, Center for Maine Contemporary Art\, SPACE Gallery\, and other venues. Burnet performs solo and with her band\, and she has had the privilege of opening for artists such as William Tyler\, Jeff Parker\, Cut Worms\, and Lady Lamb at venues and festivals. In 2023\, Burnet received a Maine ARP Grant through SPACE Gallery and the National Endowment for the Arts\, which supported the making of Kioea’s album Stand Tall. Their most recent EP\, Electric Surf\, was released in June 2025.

With so many gifted and talented members\, creating this series was a natural decision and a no-brainer. The baton of music and performance curation was passed on to Ludovica and Alexis by Beverly Grant—a great artist and long-time member since the inception of the Food Coop. Beverly is an artist\, photographer\, singer-songwriter\, composer\, and activist who has greatly contributed to our community. \nJason Weiner and the membership staff have played a key role in bringing this event to life. We thank them for sharing the same joy and respect for the arts\, which enriches all walks of life. Before the shutdown\, this concert series was a crucial and pinnacle way of bringing us closer together as a community that truly cares about the world around us. Art\, in every aspect of our human experience\, is a life-healing force. Alexis Cuadrado and Ludovica Burtone are both professional musicians\, composers\, and producers. They have expanded the vision of the curation to create a platform for freedom of expression for all. ShapeShifter Lab visionaries Fortuna Sung and Matthew Garrison have also become vital to our mission\, generously providing us with their performance space across the street from the Food Coop. \nInstagram

SUMMARY:Aya Sekine: REUNION (with special opening set by Akiko Pavolka)
DESCRIPTION:Detroit-based pianist and improviser Aya Sekine makes her long-awaited return to her old home\, New York City\, to premiere her solo project Annoyed Yet Authentic (AYA) — her first-ever improvised solo set in the city. Her performance explores a colorful world of shifting shapes\, junk sounds\, and complex tonality and rhythm — unpredictable\, textured\, and soul-stirring. Opening the evening is longtime friend Akiko Pavolka\, performing original songs that fuse jazz\, pop\, and poetic storytelling. A rare gathering and reunion — for artists\, friends\, and a celebration of making it through a difficult decade. \n\nAKIKO PAVOLKA BIOGRAPHY \nAkiko Pavolka is a New York-based musician\, composer and educator who’s strikingly original music blends pop and jazz with the music and sensibilities of her native Japan. Akiko was born in Tokyo and grew up in Yokohama.  By her teen years she was performing as a singer\, bassist and drummer with rock bands.  Her interests turned to jazz and\, after several years of moonlighting as a vocalist in Tokyo while working as a banker by day\, she decided to move to the United States to further her studies at Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music.  She graduated in 1994 with a degree in Performance and was also awarded the Cleo Laine Outstanding Vocalist Award.  She moved to New York City in 1995 and formed her band House Of Illusion shortly thereafter.  She has been performing her original music regularly in New York ever since\, and in addition she has toured extensively on the West Coast of the US and in Portugal\, Spain\, Italy\, Switzerland\, Argentina\, and her native Japan.  She has released seven albums of her own music\, the most recent being “Into The Light” from the Lisbon-based label Timbuktu.  An eighth record is in production. \nAYA SEKINEJazz Pianist · Improviser · Composer · Visual Artist · Educator \nAya Sekine is a jazz pianist and improviser originally from Osaka\, Japan\, whose career spans over three decades across Japan\, Southeast Asia\, and the United States. A Berklee-trained musician who developed her voice in New York’s underground scene\, she became a key figure in Southeast Asia’s jazz movement before relocating to Detroit in 2024 as a U.S. EB-1 Artist Green Card recipient. \nHer artistry is deeply rooted in Black American music traditions\, shaped by her early background as a percussionist. Rhythmic and percussive yet harmonically rich\, her playing combines soulful phrasing with deep respect for jazz history and tradition\, sophisticated harmony\, and a fearless use of space and tone. Her improvisations are original and swinging\, marked by bold dissonance and emotional clarity. Blending intensity and restraint\, tradition and experiment\, Sekine’s voice expands the language of bebop while venturing into freer\, more exploratory forms. \nSince moving to Detroit\, she has become an active and sought-after presence\, performing at key venues including Blue LLama\, Motor City Wine\, Music Hall\, Moondog Cafe\, Trinosophes\, and Parts & Labor. Her festival appearances include Strange Beautiful Music(SBM)\, Michigan Jazz Festival\, Summer Solstice Jazz Festival\, and Third Place Music Festival. \nShe leads Junk Jazz with Djallo Djakate and curates Ayaschool\, her long-running project space centered on experimentation and creative process. She is a founder of Brazilian Music Study Club Detroit and teaches at Michigan State University’s Detroit Community Music School. \n  \n\n\n\nhttps://ayasekine.bandcamp.com/track/annoyed-yet-authentic\nhttps://instagram.com/ayaschool\nhttps://akikopavolka.bandcamp.com/album/into-the-light

Forster \nFor Immediate Release – New York\, NY – On Jan. 2nd at 7pm\, Kick off 2026 with a night of genre-defying sound and fearless creativity. The evening opens with Gene Pritsker’s Sound Liberation\, performing an electrifying set that blends classical\, hip-hop\, and experimental sound worlds. Their performance includes he premiere of Pritsker’s powerful suite ‘Gnawa Gnaw’ featuring the poetry of Sista Zock. \nThe night continues with a full set by the stunning Sahara von Hattenberger / Joanne Kang Duo (cello and piano)\, exploring modern lyricism and bold expression. Their program features evocative works by Andrea Casarrubios\, Gene Pritsker\, Fazıl Say\, and Randall Woolf — a journey across contemporary voices from around the world. \nA night of music without borders. Innovation without compromise. \nSahara is the co-founder of “duo étrange” (a soprano/cello duo) that focuses on accessible contemporary music. She released her debut solo album in 2024 entitled “1Q84” for cello and jazz piano trio; a re-imagining of the Claude Bolling Suite alongside 4 new commissions. She is a member of the Chamber Orchestra of New York and plays regularly with other NYC-based orchestras like the New York Pops and American Composers Orchestra. She has been a recipient of 5 different Canada Council for the Arts grants to support new music\, as well as a Chamber Music America grant this year to commission NYC based composer Kebra Seyoun-Charles. Her mission is to elevate new classical music. \nJoanne Kang is a New York–based Australian pianist praised for her “fleet-fingered virtuosity” and stylistic versatility. She has performed internationally as a soloist\, chamber musician\, and recording artist\, collaborating with artists and ensembles including The American String Quartet\, the American Modern Opera Company\, members of the Silk Road Ensemble\, and the late Kaija Saariaho in the world premiere of Semafor. From 2020–2023 she was pianist of Carnegie Hall’s Ensemble Connect\, hailed as “one of the strongest ensembles in the city” (New York Classical Review). \nShe has appeared in venues across the United States\, Europe\, Asia\, and Australia\, including Carnegie Hall\, Lincoln Center\, the Sydney Opera House\, Seoul Arts Center\, among many others. Joanne holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Manhattan School of Music\, where she received the Harold Bauer and Helen Cohn Awards. \nSound Liberation\, an eclectic chamber ensemble/band\, was formed in 1996. The band has gained exposure in the New York city area and has generated a loyal core following playing such notable venues as Joe’s Pub\, Wetlands\, Knitting Factory\, The Blue Note\, Downtime\, New Music Cafe\, Cutting Room\, Le Poisson Rouge and many other performing spaces. \nSound Liberation’s musical philosophy\, developed by band founder Gene Pritsker\, is based upon “ending the segregation of sound vibration (i.e. musical Genres)”. The group incorporates its philosophy by performing compositions that encompass a diverse range of musical genre\, heavily influenced by hip-hop and rock rhythms. This enables one to hear elements from classical music to Jazz to music of various cultures at a Sound Liberation show. \n“Pritsker’s band is Wagnerian in its concept and ecumenical in delivery\, inviting all to join on stage for the journey to freedom.” \n“Sound Liberation comes across as more of a worldview than just a bunch of musicians getting together…“ \n– Jazz Weekly\, by George W. Harris • June 9\, 2025 \n______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ \nStaying in rotation for 42 years in NYC is a rare feat. In the case of a new music presenting organization\, it requires not only diligence and cognizance of achievements of the past but also an ethic of keeping one’s ear to the ground for emerging stylistic and technological developments\, as well as talented new composers on the scene. Composers Concordance\, founded in 1984 by Joseph Pehrson and Patrick Hardish\, advised by Otto Luening\, strives to present contemporary music in innovative ways\, with an emphasis on thematic programming. Directors Gene Pritsker and Dan Cooper co-curate the programs and lead the CompCord Ensemble\, Chamber Orchestra\, String Orchestra\, and Big Band. Associate Directors are Milica Paranosic\, Peter Jarvis\, Debra Kaye\, Seth Boustead\, and Audrey Morse. Composers Concordance has also created a Naxos-distributed record label: Composers Concordance Records. Composers Concordance’s overriding vision is to promote contemporary music\, composers\, and new works as a rightful and respected part of society. Good music performed and recorded well\, pushing the boundaries of sound and composition. \n“Composers Concordance..a veritable New York new music institution of concerts\, album production and multiple ensembles under a sweeping\, tenacious brand\, thriving on the emulsion of contemporary classical\, free improv\, jazz and rock\, overt humor and fearless political statements\, all very much in evidence..The ensemble..was masterful throughout.”-John Pietaro\, The New York City Jazz Record \n“An unwavering force in giving composers exposure through concert bookings and its own record label\, the intrepid new-music organization Composers Concordance” – The Brooklyn Rail \n“The Composers Concordance folks are unpredictable and at times refreshingly irreverent in a reverent sort of way….ingenious fun” – Classical-Modern Music Review \n“Enterprising new music organization” – The New York Times

Alexis Cuadrado and Ludovica Burtone are both professional musicians\, composers\, producers\, and educators. They have expanded the vision of the curation to create a platform for freedom of expression for all. ShapeShifter Lab visionaries Fortuna Sung and Matthew Garrison have also become vital to our mission\, generously providing us with their performance space across the street from the Food Coop. Annie Keating does the magic with social media and Ave Carrillo is helping the group to the production side of things the concert series. \nInstagram
