SUMMARY:Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra & Wagner Highschool Jazz Band Collaborative Concert
DESCRIPTION:7pm – Wagner Highschool Jazz Band\n8:15pm – Arturo O’Farrill & the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra\n\n\nThe Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra returns to the stage with the talented young musicians of Susan E. Wagner High School’s award-winning jazz program for a powerful concert celebrating their ongoing collaboration. After a year’s break\, this renewed partnership highlights the vitality of youth jazz education and the shared joy of making music across generations.\nAbout Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra\nGRAMMY Award-winning pianist\, composer\, and educator Arturo O’Farrill—leader of the “first family of Afro-Cuban Jazz” (New York Times)—was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Son of the late\, great composer Chico O’Farrill\, Arturo played piano in Carla Bley’s Big Band from 1979 through 1983 and earned a reputation as a soloist in groups led by Dizzy Gillespie\, Lester Bowie\, Wynton Marsalis\, and Harry Belafonte. In 2002\, he established the GRAMMY Award-winning Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra (ALJO) to bring the vital musical traditions of Afro Latin jazz to a wider general audience\, and to greatly expand the contemporary Latin jazz big band repertoire through commissions to artists across a wide stylistic and geographic range. In March 2021\, O’Farrill and the ALJO won their 7th GRAMMY for Four Questions\, with Cornel West as guest orator. In September 2018\, O’Farrill released his album\, Fandango at the Wall: A Soundtrack for the United States\, Mexico\, and Beyond\, which was also released as a documentary for HBO MAX. In 2019\, O’Farrill was appointed Professor at The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music in the Global Jazz Studies department and is currently the Associate Dean for Equity\, Diversity\, and Inclusion. O’Farrill’s debut recording with Blue Note Records …dreaming in lions… was nominated for a 2022 GRAMMY Award in the “Best Instrumental Composition” category\, and his album\, Virtual Birdland (ZOHO)\, was nominated for “Best Latin Jazz Album.” In 2023\, O’Farrill won a GRAMMY Award for Fandango at the Wall in New York in the “Best Latin Jazz Album” category. O’Farrill is a Steinway Artist and records for Blue Note Records.\nAbout Susan Wagner High School Jazz Band\nThe Susan Wagner High School Jazz Band has been a premier performance ensemble in the NYC Department of Education for years. Under the direction of Mr. Paul Corn\, they have made it as finalists in the Essentially Ellington in 2023\, where they finished 2nd in the Nation\, and again in 2024. The band has won numerous first place awards in the Heritage Festival Competitions in Williamsburg\, Boston\, and Washington D.C.\, as well as at Festival Disney in Orlando\, FL. They have also participated in the New York State School Music Association Adjudication Festival and received the grade of Gold with Distinction on Level 6 repertoire. The ensemble performs numerous concerts throughout the city each year\, both at school and throughout the community. Over the past decade\, the band has enjoyed collaborating with Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra on yearly joint performances in Brooklyn and Staten Island. They also made their Carnegie Hall debut in 2020\, Dizzy’s Club and Birdland Jazz Club debut in Spring of 2023\, and will be performing a joint concert with Eddie Palmieri in June 2024.

SUMMARY:Feet Don’t Change
DESCRIPTION:“Feet Don’t Change” is an evening-length suite written for jazz quartet (saxophone\, piano\, acoustic bass\, and drums) and string quartet.\n\n\n“Feet Don’t Change” is an evening-length suite written for jazz quartet (saxophone\, piano\, acoustic bass\, and drums) and string quartet (two violins\, viola\, and cello). While primarily a jazz project\, this music is also influenced by 19th and 20th Century European Classical and Ghanaian musical styles. Far from depicting something exotic\, “Feet Don’t Change” gets to the heart of the music I have listened to for my entire life. It is intended to provide audiences a joyful listening experience that celebrates what we have in common during a historical moment that is more divided than ever. \n\nMax Bessesen saxophone\nJosh Henderson violin\nSunjay Jayaram violin\nKayla Williams viola\nRaffi Boden cello\nSimon Willson bass\nMike Piolet drums

With so many gifted and talented members\, creating this series was a natural decision and a no-brainer. The baton of music and performance curation was passed on to Jay and Alexis by Beverly Grant—a great artist and long-time member since the inception of the Food Coop. Beverly is an artist\, photographer\, singer-songwriter\, composer\, and activist who has greatly contributed to our community. \nJason Weiner and the membership staff have played a key role in bringing this event to life. We thank them for sharing the same joy and respect for the arts\, which enriches all walks of life. Before the shutdown\, this concert series was a crucial and pinnacle way of bringing us closer together as a community that truly cares about the world around us. Art\, in every aspect of our human experience\, is a life-healing force. Alexis Cuadrado\, Ludovica Burtone\, and Jay Rodriguez are both professional musicians\, composers\, and producers. They have expanded the vision of the curation to create a platform for freedom of expression for all. Shapeshifter Lab visionaries Fortuna Sung and Matthew Garrison have also become vital to our mission\, generously providing us with their performance space across the street from the Food Coop. \nInstagram

With captivating guitar riffs and backed by the dynamic duo of Neil Collins on bass and Matt Wilson on drums\, this trio creates a blend of surf rock\, psychedelia\, and world influences. Their innovative artistry has already caught the eye of music reviewers\, like J. Swartwood from Aquarium Drunkard\, who praises Burnet’s merging of “simultaneously modern and vintage” sounds. Twice featured as a “New & Notable” on Bandcamp\, Burnet’s music is described as a cinematic listening experience. Their most recent EP\, Electric Surf\, was released in June. The night will also showcase a film featuring over 300 stunning 35mm landscape photos captured during an epic 10\,000-mile road trip. Together\, the music and visuals will take listeners on a captivating journey through the connections between nature and instrumental sound. Kioea’s band name derives from an extinct Hawaiian songbird. It symbolizes strength and translates to mean “Stand Tall.” Lead guitarist Carand Burnet adds\, “Stand Tall is a mantra that empowers me as a female musician\, and I hope this music inspires others.”ShapeShifter Lab\, located at 837 Union Street in Park Slope\, Brooklyn\, is a performance space that opened in 2011 and was initially located in Gowanus. It symbolizes strength and translates to mean “Stand Tall.” Guitarist Carand Burnet\, the driving force behind the band’s intricate melodies\, wants to uplift listeners with her music. Burnet adds\, “Stand Tall is a mantra that empowers me as a female musician\, and I hope this album inspires others.”Kioea (pronounced kēōˈāə) is a music group featuring Carand Burnet(she/her) as lead guitarist and songwriter\, supported by Neil Collins on bass and Matt Wilson on drums. Their music blends sounds of surf rock\, psychedelia\, and global influences. J. Swartwood (Aquarium Drunkard) described Burnet’s music as “simultaneously modern and vintage.” \nBandcamp recognized Kioea for their EP and album\, Stand Tall\, which they selected as New & Notable releases. Bandcamp’s Editorial Director writes\, “The debut LP from Kioea is dreamy psychedelic surf music that calls back to the ’60s while feeling remarkably contemporary.” Jason M. Rubin (The Arts Fuse) comments\, “Burnet’s surf guitar takes the listener on journeys of their own\, all of which feed a desire to hear more.” \nDoyle Dean\, host of The Dean’s List on NCPR\, notes that “Burnet’s guitar playing owes a little bit to the sound of The Ventures\, Dick Dale\, and the ’90s Canadian daredevils of the form\, Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet. But her singular voice owes just as much to that of Sonny Rollins – lost in the madness of a late 1950s session for Riverside. It’s that departure Kioea offers.” \nKioea has performed at The Thing in the Spring Festival\, Tidelands Festival\, Twenty Summers\, 3S Artspace\, The Music Hall\, Center for Maine Contemporary Art\, SPACE Gallery\, and other venues. Burnet performs solo and with her band\, and she has had the privilege of opening for artists such as William Tyler\, Jeff Parker\, Cut Worms\, and Lady Lamb at venues and festivals. In 2023\, Burnet received a Maine ARP Grant through SPACE Gallery and the National Endowment for the Arts\, which supported the making of Kioea’s album Stand Tall. Their most recent EP\, Electric Surf\, was released in June 2025.

With so many gifted and talented members\, creating this series was a natural decision and a no-brainer. The baton of music and performance curation was passed on to Ludovica and Alexis by Beverly Grant—a great artist and long-time member since the inception of the Food Coop. Alexis Cuadrado and Ludovica Burtone are both professional musicians\, composers\, and producers. They have expanded the vision of the curation to create a platform for freedom of expression for all. ShapeShifter Lab visionaries Fortuna Sung and Matthew Garrison have also become vital to our mission\, generously providing us with their performance space across the street from the Food Coop. \nInstagram
