SUMMARY:George Crotty Trio
DESCRIPTION:George Crotty\, cello \nJohn Murchison\, bass \nJeremy Smith – percussion \n\n\n\n\n\n\nKnown for their expressive fluidity and modal orientation\, The George Crotty Trio makes music that is cinematic\, collaborative\, and conversational. They draw on influences within Indian raga\, Arabic maqam\, and modal jazz; using the language of other cultures to speak new things. “I’m not at home in any one culture\,” muses Crotty\, “so the trio became my home.”\n\nGeorge Crotty has forged his own unique vocabulary on the cello. A member of the Brooklyn Raga Massive\, and Detroit-based National Arab Orchestra\, he has also worked with esteemed musicians such as Bob Ezrin\, Adam Rudolph\, Simon Shaheen\, and Paquito D’Rivera. Crotty has performed as a soloist and bandleader in North America and Europe including at the Vancouver Jazz Festival\, Small World Music Festival\, Copenhagen Vinterjazz Festival\, and New Directions Cello Festival.\n\nPowered by John Murchison (bass) and Jeremy Smith (percussion)\, the George Crotty Trio’s sound deviates from a trio’s typical hierarchy. The three players intertwine on their own spontaneous terms in an exploration of groove and colour\, lending Crotty’s tunes an exciting three-dimensional quality.\n\n\n\n\n\nInsta: \n\n\n\n\n\n@georgecrottycello\n@johnmurchis\n@jeremysmithpercussion\n\n\n\n\n\nDoors at 8:30 pm;\nonline ticket sales closes 30 mins prior to showtime.\nGet your tickets early!

SUMMARY:Holman Alvarez’s Hidden Objects
DESCRIPTION:Satoshi Takeishi (drums)\,\nJohn Hébert (bass)\,\nRachel Therrien (trumpet)\,\nHolman Alvarez (piano and composition)\n\nPianist/composer Holman Alvarez sees the world through a compositional lens. On his newest release\, Hidden Objects\, he leads an all-star band through nine expressive\, serpentine compositions that reveal a unique musical worldview. In his playing\, there is a touching lyricism and forward-thinking harmony\, mixing warmth with the cerebral. And there are references to the Latin American rhythms and modern classical figures that are an innate part of Alvarez’s compositional and improvisational vocabulary. Beyond musical touchstones\, though\, it’s evident that there is a much more grand\, big-picture artistic vision at work.
