SUMMARY:Nashaz
DESCRIPTION:Brian Prunka – Oud\nKenny Warren – Trumpet\nMatt Darriau – Sax/Clarinet/Kaval\nJohn Murchison – Bass\nChris Stromquist – Drums\nAlber Baseel – Percussion \n  \nNashaz is an expression of Brian Prunka’s lifelong devotion to both Arabic music and jazz. Dubbed “one of New York’s most eclectic\, interesting oudists” (NY Music Daily)\, his oud playing\, improvisations and compositions find common threads and natural sympathies between the disparate traditions of jazz and the maqam music of the middle east and North Africa\, resulting in an organic new sound: melodic and spirited\, ranging from wistful contemplation to kinetic intensity. The band features longtime collaborators Matt Darrriau (Paradox Trio\, Klezmatics) and Kenny Warren (Slavic Soul Party\, Sweet World).

SUMMARY:Klazz-Ma-Tazz & Robber Crabs Double Bill 10th Anniversary Concert
DESCRIPTION:Klazz-Ma-Tazz: \nBen Sutin – Violin\nElijah Shiffer – Reeds\nSam Harmet – Guitar\nBen Rosenblum – Accordion\nBen Rolston – Bass\nBen Zweig – Drums \n  \nFounded in 2014 by violinist Benjamin Sutin\, New York Music Daily once described Klazz-Ma-Tazz as “Epically Haunting Lynchian Klezmer Jazz.” Klazz-Ma-Tazz explores a mix of original music and uniquely reimagined modern jazz interpretations of traditional secular Jewish\, Eastern European and Middle Eastern music. Klazz resonates with a sense of nostalgic novelty and serving as a musical meditation\, exploring the magic of the past while languishing the mystery of the unknown. The band has released two albums\, both of which have been heard on radio stations around the world and have performed at City Winery\, Golden Festival\, Cornelia St. Cafe\, DROM and World Cafe Live among other notable venues. In February\, 2018 their arrangement of Ukrainian folk song\, “Svalava Kozatshok” went viral on Facebook with nearly 20K views. “Wild\, yet reserved\, the music of Klazz-Ma-Tazz will surprise you\, excite you and calm you\, all in one sitting”. (Fred Stal\, RG Magazine). \n  \nRobber Crabs: \nElijah Shiffer – Alto Saxophone\nJames Wengrow – Guitar\nBen Rolston – Bass\nColin Hinton – Drums \n  \nLed by saxophonist Elijah Shiffer\, the Robber Crabs have been around in some form or other for ten years. Usually a quartet\, the band explores the connections between early jazz\, punk\, avant-garde jazz\, and many other places in between to create a distinctive\, high-energy sound with a surreal and subversive sense of humor. The Robber Crabs released their first album in 2018; a second is long overdue.

SUMMARY:Love Call
DESCRIPTION:Max Bessesen – alto saxophone \nEthan Philion – bass \nDevin Drobka – drums \n  \nLove Call is a collaborative trio consisting of saxophonist Max Bessesen\, bassist Ethan Philion\, and drummer Devin Drobka. The trio formed during the height of the pandemic when Philion and Bessesen coped with their lack of performance opportunities by exploring adventurous new repertoire together in private sessions away from the stage. These informal meetings eventually coalesced into an exploration of free improvisation and abstract composition. The duo reunited with longtime-collaborator Devin Drobka when restrictions were lifted and the unit began to collaborate on new music while performing this material publicly around the country. Love Call performs several times a year ever since 2021 even though the group members live in different cities (New York\, Chicago\, Milwaukee). The trio has a distinctive musical approach marked by a congenial sense of trust and a unique\, intuitive group language. Their performances feature free improvisation and compositions by each member of the group.

SUMMARY:Buffi Jacobs Live Cello Looping Immersive
DESCRIPTION:Buffi Jacobs – Cello \nJoel Olivas – Visuals \n  \nBuffi Jacobs\, a distinguished modernistic cellist and composer\, currently resides in the vibrant New York City. Celebrated for her role in The Polyphonic Spree\, Jacobs is renowned for her enthralling performances\, innovative compositions\, and complex arrangements. Her career\, spanning over three decades\, is marked by a continuous exploration of new artistic dimensions\, pushing the limits of musical expression and captivating audiences with her distinctive performances. \nHer most recent project\, “Solitary Contemplations\,” is a poignant collection of compositions born out of the isolation experienced during the pandemic\, and is visually enhanced by Joel Olivas. This artistic venture began as Jacobs was transitioning from the national tour of “Hamilton” to a new chapter in New York City. However\, her move was soon eclipsed by the city’s lockdown\, which forced her into solitude in an environment that was still new and unfamiliar. The compositions in this collection deeply reflect her experiences during this challenging time\, capturing a wide range of emotions and thoughts she faced while isolated in a city that was yet to feel like home. Including both original works and reimagined pieces\, “Solitary Contemplations” provides a deep and introspective look into Jacobs’ experiences of solitude during the pandemic.

SUMMARY:David Bixler Auction Project featuring Arturo O'Farrill
DESCRIPTION:David Bixler – Woodwinds \nHeather Martin Bixler – Violin \nArturo O’Farrill – Piano \nRaul Reyes – Bass \nVince Cherico – Percussion \n  \nFusing Celtic\, jazz and Afro-Latin influences\, super group The Auction Project—led by saxophonist\, flutist\, and composer David Bixler\, and featuring Grammy Award-winning pianist and composer Arturo O’Farrill—create a surprising\, richly textured and thoroughly enjoyable sound. The Auction Project explores how a traditional fiddle phrase fits atop a breezy\, post-bop groove as this quintet makes history and stakes out uncommon musical territory. Down Beat magazine writes “The winning grace of Auction Project’s jazz-meets-Celtic (and sometimes Afro-Cuban) sound is its naturalness and intimacy.” After putting the band on pause for several years\, Bixler has reinvented the band\, inspired after spending the fall of 2023 in County Clare\, Ireland studying the flute. In addition to O’Farrill and Bixler\, The Auction Project features All-Ireland medalist violinist/fiddler Heather Bixler\, Grammy Award-winning percussionist Vince Cherico\, and bassist Raul Reyes. \n
