The group is composed of one big band and two small ensembles that perform Latin jazz and standard jazz pieces and showcase the finest young talent from across all NYC boroughs. \nFounded in 2010 by Arturo O’Farril and managed by the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance\,  The Fat Cats is led by Zack O’Farrill with Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra members Jim Seeley\, Berta Moreno\, and Jasim Perales\, as well as Arthur Alvarez and Adam Baksh-García. \nOver the years\, The Fat Cats have taken the stage at New York venues such as the Brooklyn Museum\, New York Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center\, the Frick Collection\, the Greene Space at WNYC\, BRIC House\, Birdland and Brooklyn’s Shapeshifter Lab who has welcomed the band for weekly rehearsals since their 2023-2024 season.

SUMMARY:Afro-Cuban Percussion Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Pellito El Afrokan\, congas percussion \nCuban percussionist Pellito el Afrokan\, the grandson of the late great Cuban musician Pello El Afrokan\, the originator of the Cuban Mozambique rhythm/dance\, will conduct a percussion workshop where he will teach  Cuban rhythms on conga drums and other percussion instruments.  Conga drums will be provided\, though you are welcome to bring your own conga drum.  The workshop will start at 5:30 p.m. with an introduction to Pellito and the history of the original Mozambique rhythm from Cuba.  The Mozambique rhythm and the dance will be taught to workshop attendees\, followed by instruction in other Afro-Cuban rhythms such as  Rumba\, Conga de Comparsa\, Yuka\, and Makuta. \n \n  \nThis program is ideal for intermediate to advanced percussionists or other musicians interested in learning more about Cuban percussion.\nOmar Merencio Izquierdo was born in Havana\, Cuba\, on January 7\, 1980. From a very young age\, his inclination for music began due to the musical influence and artistic environment that he breathed in his family. His grandfather was Maestro Pello el Afrokan\, and his great-uncles were also excellent Congueros Roberto Izquierdo and Gilberto Izquierdo. This musical and percussion heritage goes back a long way because Pellito’s great-grandfather was the first conga player to have a Typical Orchestra in Cuba\, and his name was Roberto Izquierdo Morales\, who played with the Belisario López Orchestra in the ‘30s\, ‘40s and ‘50s.\n

DESCRIPTION:Sept 27 \nWorkshop 5:30pm – 6:15pm \nJam 6:30pm – 8:30pm \nWorkshops & Jam Sessions Hosted by Matt Garrison @ShapeShifterLab\nEvery Wednesday in September 2023 (September 6\, 13\, 20\, 27)\n\n\n5:30-6:15pm Workshop: Jam Session Ideas/Approaches\n\n\n\nMatt will discuss how the Jam Sessions he hosts can and will be approached.\nHe will discuss: Songs\, Forms\, Improvisation\, Dynamics\, Tempos\, Feel\, Genres\, Technique\, Emotional State and other important topics that will set the stage for the actual ShapeShifter Lab Jam Session.\nHe feels that doing so will give a strong basis for all jammers to get a sense of what’s possible.\nThe further idea of the workshop is trigger a conversation\, spark ideas and open the floor for clear dialogue about a possible set of Jam Session frameworks.\nAll Experience levels welcome!\n\n\n\n6:30-8:30pm Jam Session
