DESCRIPTION:At Soundbox\, we play to read! \nSoundbox is a pre-literacy playgroup focused on phonemes\, the individual parts of spoken words. For example\, the word “cat” can be separated into 3 phonemes. \nA step up in learning to read is learning to listen. \nIn each play session\, friends open a Soundbox and explore the “minis” inside to discover a sound pattern! A miniature apple\, a tiny alligator\, a very small astronaut\, an itty bitty axe\, and mini alpaca all begin with the same sound! \nWe play with our minis and learn more about our new sound through activities and games that are both super fun and researched based. We learn how to break words into sound parts\, practice sound order\, discover sound patterns\, and map sounds to letters. These skills are foundational for emerging readers. With each Soundbox they open\, our friends take one more step on their journey towards reading! \nCome play with us! \n** Currently this is NOT a drop-off play group. Adults stay to play. There is no charge for this 4-round session. This session is designed for children who are 4 to 5 years old. There are LOTS of small parts. Not suitable for kids under 4. We feature artists who are pushing the limits of technology and the use of these new tools in live music making. \nThe Future Instruments Festival will also include a live workshop with the artists who will discuss the technologies that they use and their process of creating a live electronic music performance. \nVisuals by 0h10M1ke and Jackson Lin. \n— \nDaedelus has been an instigator of electronic music culture for the past 20-plus years. A fore-figure of Los Angeles’ beat scene\, they have released more than 20 LPs\, countless EPs\, remixes\, and additional productions on labels such as Ninja Tune\, Brainfeeder\, Dome of Doom\, and more. As a performer they’re synonymous with performative controllers\, from the Monome to computer-free modular\, and have played 1\,000-plus shows across six continents at venues ranging from the underground Low End Theory to festival main stages such as Coachella. \nThey were the founding faculty member for the Berklee College of Music’s new EDI (electronic digital instrument) program where they continue to teach. \nDan FreeMan is a producer/bassist and music technologist based in Brooklyn\, New York and an expert on the integration of live instruments with laptops using Ableton Live and future instrument technology. Originally from Boston\, he came to New York at age 23 and worked for years as a session bassist\, playing and touring throughout NYC\, Europe\, and Latin America at venues from many underground Brooklyn parties to Carnegie Hall. He has performed and given workshops on electronic music production and performance at festivals\, universities\, and schools worldwide including at: SXSW\, Berghain (Berlin)\, DNA Music (Bogota)\, Argenlive (Buenos Aires)\, Universidad de Santiago (Chile)\, Teatro Rubén Dario (Nicaragua)\, and Sonar (Barcelona\, Spain). \nCurrently\, FreeMan teaches at Berklee College of Music in the EDI (electronic digital instrument) program while also serving on the faculty of New York University’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music and the Juilliard School. He also has a production space in Brooklyn where he produces and sound designs records and live shows. \n0H10M1ke is a Brooklyn-based graffiti artist and performer known for his one-line street portraits and his contemporary art paintings in galleries and art fairs at Miami Art Basel and Art Expo New York. He served as official portrait artist for the Museum of Graffiti in December 2023 and has upcoming shows in Tokyo\, Japan and Cologne\, Germany. \n0H10M1ke brings an entirely live and highly analog approach to VJing. Focused on the line and using the simplest of design tools\, he digitally graffitis the stage and set. The frenetic energy of “drawing to music” directly on performers lights the space\, creating a digitally drawn live visual score as the backdrop to the show. \nAs resident visual artist for Comandante Zero\, 0H10M1ke has played extensively and toured with Dan Freeman\, adding live visuals to their multimedia spectacular for many years. \nJackson Lin is a New York-based artist who seamlessly combines art and technology to create immersive experiences. With a deep-rooted passion for pushing the boundaries of artistic expression\, he merges traditional techniques with innovative digital tools. Through interactive installations and mind-bending projection mapping displays\, he pushes the envelope of what is possible in the realm of art and technology. Jackson Lin’s work embodies the powerful union of creativity and innovation in today’s digital age.

The group is composed of one big band and two small ensembles that perform Latin jazz and standard jazz pieces and showcase the finest young talent from across all NYC boroughs. \nFounded in 2010 by Arturo O’Farril and managed by the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance\,  The Fat Cats is led by Zack O’Farrill with Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra members Jim Seeley\, Berta Moreno\, and Jasim Perales\, as well as Arthur Alvarez and Adam Baksh-García. \nOver the years\, The Fat Cats have taken the stage at New York venues such as the Brooklyn Museum\, New York Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center\, the Frick Collection\, the Greene Space at WNYC\, BRIC House\, Birdland and Brooklyn’s Shapeshifter Lab who has welcomed the band for weekly rehearsals since their 2023-2024 season.

SUMMARY:NYYS Jazz Band - Thad Jones: Living Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Director Michael Thomas will lead the NYYS Jazz Band in his inaugural season as director. The program showcases the legacy of Thad Jones ranging from Thad Jones’s early days with the Count Basie Orchestra\, to his work as a co-founder and leader of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra.  This concert will feature works from Count Basie\, Duke Ellington\, Thad Jones\, as well as NYYS First Music Commission titled Dream Logic by Ben Beckman .\n\n\nAbout NYYS:\nThe New York Youth Symphony is one of the most awarded youth programs of its kind in the nation\, including the 2022 Grammy award for Best Orchestral Performance. It is recognized for its innovative\, educational programs for talented young musicians. Founded in 1963 as an orchestra to showcase the metropolitan area’s most gifted musicians ages 10-22\, its activities have since grown to encompass programs in chamber music\, conducting\, composition\, jazz\, and musical theater songwriting with performances at world-class venues including Carnegie Hall and Jazz at Lincoln Center. Through its commissioning program\, First Music\, the NYYS has commissioned over 170 works from young composers since 1984.

DESCRIPTION:8 PM SCREENING OF AWARD-WINNING FILM ‘INVISIBLE LANDSCAPES\n8:50 PM LIVE PERFORMANCE OF THE BAND fyield (CZ/IS)\n9:30 PM DISCUSSION ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE\n\n\nCZECH-ICELANDIC COLLABORATION FYIELD BRING LIVE EXPERIENCE TO NEW YORK FOR THE FIRST TIME\nINCLUDES SCREENING OF AWARD-WINNING FILM ‘INVISIBLE LANDSCAPES’ + LIVE PERFORMANCE OF THE BAND fyield (CZ/IS) + DISCUSSION ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE\n\nThis fall\, the Czech-Icelandic collaboration fyield will bring their unique live experience to the US for the very first time. On their debut album\, Future Landscapes\, fyield explores the locations used to satiate the needs of our society in terms of power consumption and nourishment\, or places impacted by the exigencies of industrial society. Altogether\, the artists’ adventurous journey shows us how solutions to existing problems bring new\, often unsuspected and complicated issues. By focusing on the sound that emanates from technological\, power-generating and other entities\, they testify to our existence beyond the visible. Their work portrays unique entities that don’t usually attract our attention – even though our civilization depends on them. They are not people\, mythical figures or animals\, but technological devices and ecosystems that open up questions about our climate future.\n\nThe album was preceded by a sonic expedition. A group of musicians\, accompanied by leading European field recordists\, Sara Pinheiro from Portugal and Magnús Bergsson from Iceland\, visited eight locations in the Czech Republic and Iceland. With the help of special instruments such as hydrophones\, geophones\, ambeo and electromagnetic sensors\, they listened to the manifestations of infrastructures that the human ear alone cannot hear. The compositions bring us close to\, or inside\, the organs of geothermal\, hydroelectric or coal-fired power plants\, a CO2 repository\, an aquaponic farm\, a lagoon created by melting glaciers\, and an oil well. The Czech Republic and Iceland represent countries with contrasting approaches to CO2 production. The Czech fossil-fuel-impacted landscape is juxtaposed with the seemingly environmentally sensitive Iceland\, where the technology it employs poses a number of problems of a completely different type.\n\nfyield warns us that it is futile to hope for a single save-all solution to the climate crisis.\n\nThis unique live experience will also include a screening of Invisible Landscapes\, a film by Ivo Bystřičan (awarded as the best film documentary at the AFO: The 58th International Festival of Science Documentary Films\, Academia Film Olomouc of Palacký University 2023). It sounds like a bird’s song\, and you can’t take your ears off it. But it’s not – it’s just the popping bubbles of a melting glacier. A group of musicians equipped with sensitive microphones and headphones set out on an exploration. They head to places in the Czech and Icelandic countryside both marred by industry and untouched by man to discover and understand the sound of catastrophe – the sound of ongoing climate change\, which in itself can be far more beautiful\, and more imaginative\, than what it heralds. While sight allows phenomena and things to be encompassed in a static state and in a certain entirety\, hearing allows us to understand how they affect and clash with their surroundings. Sound is the consequence of an event that happened in the past and points towards a future now being decided\, one that may potentially be inevitable and destructive for us. It cannot yet be seen in the invisible landscapes\, but – if we listen carefully – it is already there. The film will be presented by Ivo Bystřičan and producer Tereza Swadoschová\, who will lead the discussion after the screening.\n\n  \nfyield brings together leading figures of the Czech and Icelandic independent music scene. Czech musicians Václav Havelka and Kryštof Kříček from the band Please The Trees are joined by Iceland’s Pan Thorarensen\, a member of the ambient trio Stereo Hypnosis and founder of the international experimental music festival Extreme Chill\, which has been held in Reykjavik since 2010.

DESCRIPTION:The Fat Cats Youth Orchestra Open Workshop and Rehearsals Weekly at ShapeShifter\n  \nSparkling with the sound of young talent\, The Fat Cats is a pre-professional youth orchestra. The group is composed of one big band and two small ensembles that perform Latin jazz and standard jazz pieces and showcase the finest young talent from across all NYC boroughs. \nFounded in 2010 by Arturo O’Farril and managed by the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance\,  The Fat Cats is led by Zack O’Farrill with Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra members Jim Seeley\, Berta Moreno\, and Jasim Perales\, as well as Arthur Alvarez and Adam Baksh-García. \nOver the years\, The Fat Cats have taken the stage at New York venues such as the Brooklyn Museum\, New York Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center\, the Frick Collection\, the Greene Space at WNYC\, BRIC House\, Birdland and Brooklyn’s Shapeshifter Lab who has welcomed the band for weekly rehearsals since their 2023-2024 season.
